I used iUniverse to publish a book last June. I went through their Teacher's Press, which is their partnership with Weekly Reader (remember them?) By the way, this a great program for teachers and/or students. Anyway, I found everyone at iUniverse to be very helpful and professional, and they consitently beat their own deadlines. My very first book was published by a 'traditional' publisher- will never go back to that! I'm using iUniverse again for book number 3.

iUniverse provides excellent customer service, but in my case I was blindsided by the absolutely exorbitant selling price they assigned to my book. It gets unanimous 5-star reviews on Amazon and elsewhere, but its potential sales are crippled by a list price that is simply unreasonable. Its grossly inflated cost prevents me from marketing my book to certain resellers who would ordinarily welcome it with enthusiasm. To their credit, the iUniverse rep with whom I discussed this problem took my feedback very graciously and promised to address the issue with staff for possible future improvements in their procedures. But that won't help my situation. If I had to do another self-published book, I'd be certain to find out its ultimate selling price well before it was too late to revise the manuscript or even back out of the deal altogether. I regret very much that iUniverse did not afford me such opportunities as I worked through their processes. Without this critical issue, I'd easily rate iUniverse at a 4-star level, maybe even 5.

I used iUniverse for my first book. There are a lot of hidden costs. For example, their Editor's choice program sounds very attractive if you can get into it. However to do so, you must use all of their services, including their editors who charge a bundle. It would have cost me over $5,000 just for editing. Instead, I used the services of a University English professor with a great deal of editing experience for considerably less. I still would have had to have an iUniverse editor go over it for an extra $200 to qualify for consideration. Bottom line, the programs look atractive, but may only be eye candy unless you're rich. For those prices, you can publish through other such as Infinity for a lot less. Stay away from them now that they've joined with Authorhouse, a premier ripoff group. Also, they want to charge you $200.00 for set up of a website and ~$30.00 per month for maintenance. You can hire a high school kid with a lot more experience and pay only $9.00/mo with one of may premium webhosts. Lastly, their authors discounts don't amount to much and as stated by another reviewer, the books are overpriced.
